Her brothers Charles and James have been criticized for failing to visit her tomb but the seventeenth century did not have our modern preoccupation with public outpourings of grief and much had changed by the time they returned to England. Charles, especially, wished to forget the past. More than two hundred years later Queen Victoria, who loved the Isle of Wight, learned that Elizabeth’s remains had been rediscovered when the church of St Thomas was rebuilt in the mid-1850s, so she decided to engage the renowned Italian sculptor, Marochetti, to design and build a suitable monument for this forgotten Stuart princess. It shows Elizabeth on her deathbed, with Charles I’s bible and, above her, a shattered portcullis, indicating that death had released her from long imprisonment. The inscription, ‘To the memory of Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King Charles I’, records that the monument was erected ‘as a token of respect for her virtues and of sympathy for her misfortunes, by Victoria R’.

Henrietta Maria noted her daughter’s death towards the end of a letter to her sister, Christine, in which she had talked about her niece’s marriage and the prospects of Charles II in Scotland before remarking that she had suffered another affliction with Elizabeth’s passing. The princess was, she said, well out of the hands of ‘those traitors’ but the general sense of her words is more of self-pity than sorrow for the loss of a daughter she hardly remembered.14 Nor did she even mention her youngest son. He had never known life without Elizabeth and now he was left with only the solicitous Mr Lovell and a handful of servants. His was a bitter loss indeed.
